چکیده

Based on 2760 well-defined substorm onsets in the Northern Hemisphere and 1432 in the Southern Hemisphere observed by the FUV Imager on board the IMAGE spacecraft, a detailed statistical study is performed including both auroral regions. This study focuses on the hemispheric comparisons. Southward pointing interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is favorable for substorm to occur, but still 30% of the events are preceded by northward IMF. The magnetic latitude (MLat) of substorm onset depends mainly on the merging electric field (Em) with a relationship of |dMLat|=−5.2E0.5 m , where dMLat is the deviation from onset MLat. In addition, seasonal effects on onset MLat are also detected, with about 2 degrees higher latitudes during solstices than equinoxes. Both IMF By and solar illumination have a significant influence on the magnetic local time (MLT) of onsets. An average relation, dMLT=0.25By between IMF By and the deviation from onset MLT, was found. The By dependence varies slightly with the onset latitude. At lower latitudes (higher activity) it is reduced. After removal of the relationship with IMF By a linear relationships remains between the solar zenith angle and onset MLT with dMLT=1 min/deg. Therefore, both solar illumination and IMF By can contribute to hemispheric longitudinal displacements of substorm onset locations from conjugacy. No indications for systematic latitudinal displacements between the hemispheres have been found.

Interhemispheric comparison of spectral width boundary as observed by SuperDARN radars

Previous studies have shown that dayside equatorward edge of coherent HF radar backscatter having broad Doppler spectral width is coincident with the equatorward edge of the cusp particle precipitation. This enables the boundary between broad and narrow spectral width backscatters (spectral width boundary) in the dayside magnetic local time sector to be used as a proxy for the open/closed field...

No evidence for externally triggered substorms based on superposed epoch analysis of IMF Bz

[1] Superposed epoch analyses have shown that, on average, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns northward close to substorm onset. This has been commonly accepted as evidence for the substorm onset being triggered by a rapid northward turning of the IMF. Here we show that the tendency arises in any superposed epoch analysis of the IMF in which event onset is biased to occur for southwa...

Relations between multiple auroral streamers, preonset thin arc formation, and substorm auroral onset

[1] Recent ground‐based imager observations have provided evidence of precursor auroral activity leading to substorm auroral onset, where the precursor is initiated by a poleward boundary intensification (PBI) followed by an auroral streamer moving equatorward toward the onset latitude leading to substorm auroral onset. However, since many streamers do not lead to substorms, the question arises...

Multiple magnetic dipolarizations observed by THEMIS during a substorm

The magnetic field dipolarization in the vicinity of substorm onset and during substorm expansion phase during the period of 06:00–06:40 UT on 15 February 2008 is investigated with observations from multiple probes of THEMIS. It is found that the magnetic dipolarization at the substorm onset (the onset time was about 06:14 UT) was not accompanied by obvious magnetic disturbance and ion bulk spe...

Interhemispheric observations of the ionospheric signature of tail reconnection during IMF-northward non-substorm intervals

This paper presents the first interhemispheric radar observations interpreted as the ionospheric response to tail reconnection during IMF-northward non-substorm intervals. SuperDARN measurements of plasma convection in the nightside ionospheres of both hemispheres, taken on 21–22 February and 26–27 April 2000, show bursts of flow in the midnight sector which are understood to be characteristic ...
